Though often thought of as a purely modern phenomenon, the

celebration of Valentine’s Day has a long and rich history. The holiday has its roots in the
Roman festival of Lupercalia, which was observed annually on February 15. Lupercalia was a fertility festival that included animal sacrifice and a matchmaking lottery.
The holiday was later Christianized and shifted to February 14 in order to co-opt the pagan celebration

. In the Middle Ages, the holiday became associated with courtly love and romantic poetry. It was during this time that the first Valentine’s Day cards were created.
The holiday has evolved over the centuries, but the central theme of love has remained constant. And art history is filled with beautiful presentations of love in art.
Some of the most iconic images of love in art come from the Italian Renaissance. Artists like

Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo Buonarroti created works that celebrated the beauty of the human form and the power of love. Leonardo’s iconic “Mona Lisa” paints a picture of a woman who is both alluring and mysterious. Michelangelo’s “ Pietà” is a religious work that depicts the Virgin Mary cradling the body of her crucified son, Jesus Christ.

But despite the religious subject matter, the work is filled with emotion and love.
Other artists have used their work to comment on the complexities of love. In his series

“The Lovers”, Belgian artist René Magritte examines the relationship between love and reality. His paintings show a man and a woman kissing, but their faces are hidden behind cloth or leaves. This forces the viewer to question what is really being shown: is it love or just an illusion?
Whether it’s a representational work or an abstract piece, art can be used to express the many facets of love. And on this Valentine’s Day, take a moment to appreciate the ways in which artists have captured the emotion of love in their work.
